THIS IS HOW IT WORKS
The Uninsured Motorist Identification Database
supercedes all other forms of automobile liabiltiy insurance-verification.
All insurance companies send a complete
list of every vehicle and every driver they insure.
This reporting is due at the beginning of every month.
The Department of Public Safety reports on every licensed
driver in the state. This reporting is done at the
beginning of every month
The Department of Motor Vehicles reports on every
registered vehicle in the state. This reporting is
done at the beginning of every month.
All insurance policies are then paired with the vehicle
and/or driver. Presently we are matching over 95% of all
policies to their corresponding vehicle. However, there
is an error factor of 3% to 5%.
This information is then put on-line for your use through
the State computer system using the previously described
procedures.
The caution is the "timeliness" of the information. there
is a STRONG indication the information is correct...as
of the first of every month.
Because the database is updated monthly, newly
registered vehicles or vehicles with policies issued within
the last 60 days, may not appear on the database. Officers
should use their discretion, evaluating all evidence of
insurance presented by the driver before issuing a citation.
